Manchester United are no longer the top club in England

Under Alex Ferguson the Red Devils were the top side in the Premier League. Since his departure, the team has been on the decline.

Mourinho is the third manager in three years. He inherited some of the players brought in by David Moyes and Louis van Gaal including misfits Fellaini, Memphis Depay and Adnan Januzaj.

While United has been a shell of the club it once was, crosstown rivals Manchester City has been on the rise. Backed by Sheikh Mansour’s billions, City has become the best team in Manchester.

Chelsea also has a billionaire owner in Roman Abramovich. The Blues are now regular contenders for top honors.

Last season Leicester City shocked the world and became Premier League champions. United finished fifth.

This year Mauricio Pochettino led Tottenham to its most successful finish of the Premier League era. The fact that he was able to do so without the level of funds available to richer clubs is impressive.

Manchester United are still a big club. They now, however, have competition for the title of top team in England.

This is another factor that James Rodriguez should consider before making a move.
