Just what does Liverpool FC need in the summer transfer window?

Midfield

Some pundits believe one big hole to fill is at midfield as the Reds are lacking a pure defensive midfielder. But, the boss disagrees:

“Second balls after set-pieces, another defensive midfielder would not really be around this situation so it does not help a lot,” Klopp told the team’s website following Wednesday’s 3-0 win at Sydney FC. “Half-spaces when counter-pressing does not work, another defensive midfielder [does not help], it’s all about organization.”

By the way … here are the goals from the 3-0 friendly win:

Back to the real story.

Now, just because Klopp said it wouldn’t have helped to have a defensive center-back, the Reds have been linked to Dutch 17-year-old Perr Schuurs. The potential move is likely for development, not starting play.

Then, there’s the issue with Philippe Coutinho. Is he staying or going? As we have suggested, it is likely he is staying, if for no other reason that Barcelona isn’t really THAT interested. Lucas Leiva is most likely leaving the club and Mamadou Sakho is as well — provided Crystal Palace come up with the £30 million Liverpool wants for him.

RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita is also in the mix for a move to Anfield. According to Transfermarkt.com, the first-teamer is under contract until 2020. His market value is around €22 million. He transferred to Leipzig from RB Salzberg in 2016 for €15 million.

Liverpool have really good midfielders. Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Gini Wijnaldum and Emre Can all had flashes of brilliance on the field. But, it was fleeting and inconsistent. Like I said, they are good, but what’s missing is a “great” midfielder.
