A look at the best players this past year in the Spanish top flight.

The 2016-17 La Liga season featured dramatic twists and turns, eventually coming down to the final matchday to decide a champion. Real Madrid extended their record for the most Spanish top-flight titles with their 33rd after a 2-0 victory at Malaga.

Los Blancos and manager Zinedine Zidane were a force throughout the campaign, and will look to add the UEFA Champions League trophy when they face Juventus on June 3. Madrid will aim to become the first club to successfully defend their European crown in the Champions League era.

The club’s 40-match unbeaten run across all competitions set the stage for their title triumph, but their El Clasico rivals kept the pressure on Zidane’s team. Barcelona finished only three points behind in second place, and a Malaga upset against Real Madrid would have delivered La Liga’s trophy to the Camp Nou.

Atletico Madrid and Sevilla secured the division’s remaining Champions League places, and performed well in various stages of the season. Both sides enjoyed strong performances from several key players to earn their places in the world’s most prestigious club competition.
