Real Madrid’s title-winning campaign ultimately came down to a variety of different aspects. One of the most consistent of those aspects was the fantastic play of left-back Marcelo throughout 2016-17. The Brazilian defender was a constant threat to opposing sides at both ends of the pitch.

One of the longest-serving members of the current squad, Marcelo brings a sense of stability to Madrid’s back-line and can often be a catalyst in the attack. The 29-year-old finished the past season with two goals and ten assists in league play.

A player who immediately brings to mind the magic of Roberto Carlos in years past, Marcelo has the ability to completely take over the left flank with his touch and skill on the ball. He is able to create space, and his crosses into dangerous areas often lead to excellent scoring opportunities for his team-mates.

As is the case with many full-backs who play higher up the pitch, there can be a concern that a sharp counter-attack can cause issues for Los Blancos at the back. But Marcelo has the pace and instinct to ensure that he’s able to make up ground when necessary.

Real Madrid won their first La Liga title in five years, and a major part of their successful formula was the play of Marcelo throughout the season.
