Number 10: Philippe Coutinho v Arsenal

The first goal on this list is Liverpool’s first goal of the season. Renovation of the Main Stand at Anfield, to increase capacity, meant that Liverpool began the season with three straight away games. The opener was a tussle with old rivals Arsenal and the biggest billing of the opening weekend. The Red’s had struggled in the first half with Theo Walcott scoring a goal and missing another from the penalty spot. Coutinho’s glorious free kick came on the stroke of half time. Liverpool went into the break tied at 1-1 and never looked back, scoring 3 second half goals in a stellar 45 minute display.

This list could have had more than one Coutinho free kick. He bagged one against Crystal Palace at Anfield and another in the season finale against Middlesbrough. He bookended the season with sensational free kick strikes.

This is the one that stands above the others for a number of reasons. Firstly, the timing. Away to Arsenal on the stroke of half time, changing the course of the game. This goal altered the game and perhaps even the season. Who knows how a demoralizing defeat to Arsenal would have changed the year for Liverpool.

Secondly the distance. This was not scored from the edge of the area. You can see in the video he line this up 30 yards from goal. Thirdly, the execution of the free kick elevates it above his other contenders. This was scored with power and phenomenal accuracy, nestling perfectly in the top corner.

Finally the elite quality of the opposition. Coutinho’s other free kicks were against Wayne Hennessy and Brad Guzan. No disrespect to them but neither are in the elite level of Petr Cech. There can’t have been many better free kicks scored against the Czech stopper.

A great goal to start the season and a great goal to start our list!
