Number 3: Roberto Firmino v Stoke City

Some goals just make you want to rip your shirt off. This stunner saw Firmino take the booking for going shirtless as he parades around the Britannia like a boxer flexing after a knockout. In fact this goal was a knockout for Liverpool at a stadium they have struggled to win at in previous seasons. Liverpool were able to hold onto this lead to grab a crucial away win in the battle for Champions League places.

This goal comes on a quick counter attack with another long ball. Gini Wijnaldum gets the credit for seeing Roberto Firmino in space and finding him with pinpoint accuracy. Now would be a good time to mention the defending. It is awful. Not just bad or sub par. Awful. They have absolutely no idea where Firmino is. They seem to be admiring Wijnaldum’s pass more than anyone. Then when the Brazilian lets the ball drop there is no urgency to get back and make the tackle.

The defending is poor, however the finish is excellent. Most players would take a touch. Bring the ball down under control and drive into the box. Roberto Firmino knows exactly what he wants to do with all this time and space.

He lets the ball drop and then he a rocket on the half volley. It sails over the keeper and into the Stoke City net at full blast. There are seven seconds from Dejan Lovren having possession on the edge of the Liverpool box and the ball crashing into the Stoke net. Deadly and decisive in a crucial game.
