Number 5: Liverpool

There has been much talk heading into this summer of Liverpool’s need to improve their squad. Manager Jurgen Klopp made the most of his resources this term to achieve a top four finish. At the turn of the year it was looking as if the Reds would be in the conversation for a title challenge. A terrible start to 2017 – one win in nine – put an end to that possibility. The Anfield faithful are looking for their side to kick on and put together a more sustained attempt at a title challenge. They will also be wanting to savor those European nights for which Anfield is famous.

The Champions League will bring a much greater demand on the Liverpool squad. Riyad Mahrez would be a fine addition to help relieve some of that pressure. His movement and vision would complement the Liverpool forwards and he could be a great replacement for Coutinho if the Brazilian moves to Barcelona.

The Algerian is 26 years old, entering his prime years for a midfielder. You get the feeling that Klopp’s Liverpool project is a few seasons away from achieving silverware in the top competitions.
