Number 1: Arsenal

There are five English teams in next season’s Champion League and Arsenal are not one of them. For the first time this Millennium the Gunners will be on the outside looking in as their rivals take on the best teams in Europe. That hurts. It really hurts.

Arsene Wenger will be in charge next term and is determined to prove his critics wrong. There is good cause for hope that they can make a leap next year. It was a strong finish to the season after the defensive change to a back three. Winning the FA Cup against champions Chelsea was an encouraging way to finish the season.

Riyad Mahrez presents a wonderful opportunity for Arsenal. If they add him they immediately bring a player capable of playing the high technique style that Wenger demands. You get the feeling the manager is never comfortable playing Walcott or Oxlade-Chamberlain regularly and rues the loss of Santi Cazorla, arguably their best midfielder. Mahrez would compliment the current attackers and be able to step into the shoes should one leave.

Both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez may leave this summer leaving huge holes. A preemptive purchase of the Algerian would negate the loss of either of those creative players. That would give the club a safe period to reinvest that money. That way Arsenal would not be left short come August 31st.

Whereas Jamie Vardy chose to stay at Leicester it is thought Mahrez’s desire to leave was shut down by the club. This year he may get his wish and get the dream move to London that he has been wanting for the last year.
