Alexandre Lacazette may snub Arsenal

Arsene Wenger is desperate to add a few big name stars to his squad to turn the Gunners around. One of his primary targets is Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette. Unfortunately for Wenger and company, the prolific Frenchman isn’t sure whether or not he wants to leave his boyhood club.

Lacazette candidly admits that he finds himself at a “crossroads” at this stage of his career. He grew up playing for Lyon and has emerged as a star for the French club. His stellar play has attracted interest from a number of big clubs across Europe. Most notably, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid both want to bring him in.

It’s an admirable sentiment from a modern footballer. He’s achieved a great deal at Lyon, but is expressing a sincere emotion for the club. On the other hand, he can certainly gain more fame and riches by accepting a move to club with more financial resources.

Both Atletico and Arsenal satisfy that requirement. The Gunners seem to trail Diego Simeone and company in this transfer race though. In fact, many believe that Lacazette would already have joined the La Liga giants without the presence of their current transfer ban. The Spanish giants are powerless to lock up the Frenchman until they receive relief from their penalty.

If that doesn’t happen, look for Arsenal to redouble their efforts to bring Lacazette to England. He’s expressing doubt over a move now, but that doubt could be erased by a massive financial offer from the Gunners. It’s widely believed that Arsene Wenger will be dramatically loosening the club’s purse strings this summer.

If that happens, Lacazette will, once again, emerge as one of the club’s primary attacking targets. They’ll still face significant competition from Lyon to sign him though. It’s going to take a lot of money to overcome the comfort the star enjoys in his home country.

We’ve seen this movie before though. In modern football, money seems to always win out in the end. The smart money is still on Lacazette moving to Atletico Madrid, Arsenal or some other big club this summer.
