Why this season’s European opener is a must-watch event.

The 2017 UEFA Super Cup will once again see the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League meet to decide the season’s first trophy. Sometimes looked at as a formality with fans and supporters, the match on August 8 in Macedonia brings together two sides that could make for a truly dramatic fixture.

Real Madrid and manager Zinedine Zidane face Manchester United and Jose Mourinho in what is becoming a more intriguing atmosphere with each passing day.

Mourinho’s time in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu at the beginning of this decade adds to the tension, but it is the recent transfer speculation between the clubs that has proceedings reaching a fever pitch.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Amidst accusations of tax fraud in Spain, anger and frustration have had rumours of Cristiano’s Ronaldo’s departure from Real Madrid circulated last week. And one club that may be ready to pounce is the Portuguese superstar’s former club Manchester United.

CR7 enjoyed great success under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, and his move to Madrid has continued his incredible production. But now with a possible return to Manchester on the cards, the UEFA Super Cup would see a unique situation for all involved.

Ronaldo’s current club situation could change this summer, and the match on August 8 would receive a tremendous spotlight in the football world.

Alvaro Morata

Another Real Madrid player on Manchester United’s radar is Spanish striker Alvaro Morata. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic leaving this summer, the Red Devils certainly require the services of a potent goalscoring forward.

The possibility of both Morata and Ronaldo moving to Manchester has been talked about, and that type of scenario could send ripples through European football despite the enormous costs and fees.

Alvaro Morata has been a productive striker for Real Madrid, but could be set to face Los Blancos immediately after a summer transfer in the UEFA Super Cup.

David de Gea

One of the most talented goalkeepers in the world, Manchester United’s David de Gea is no stranger to Real Madrid and the transfer market. Attempts to bring the keeper to the Bernabeu have failed in the past, but could end up being successful this summer.

De Gea’s positioning and instincts have seen spectacular play over the past few years, and Madrid appear ready to move on from Keylor Navas. With both teams anxious to make the deals happen, there is even the amazing possibility of all players mentioned to move in one major transfer.
