Why the absurd numbers discussed recently only tell part of the tale.
The transfer market in football will always see extravagant and lavish numbers for the greatest talent, and that fact is especially true of the sport’s richest clubs. But for certain players like Cristiano Ronaldo, it is not so easy to see all of the potential value.
With tax fraud accusations in Spain recently driving the Portuguese superstar towards an exit from Real Madrid, reports this week appear to point at CR7 moving on from this latest episode and staying at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Ronaldo’s release clause is reportedly set at €1 billion, and rumours of a return to Manchester United begin to sound even more unrealistic when considering these types of fees. But that type of number certainly stands out, and it is natural to wonder if even he is worth that astronomical amount.
Production on the pitch
Ultimately, Ronaldo’s incredible skills will bring any club success across various competitions. In the case of Manchester United, the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League are key priorities moving forward and are achievements that are expected.
Reports put the winnings of both at an estimated €240 million, with the English top flight accounting for around €150 million. Real Madrid received just under €90 million for their recent Champions League triumph over Juventus.
Considering the costs needed to bring in other players, coaches and all elements surrounding a football club, the numbers begin to seem implausible. But when considering other areas, some interesting talking points arise also.
Merchandise
When Ronaldo moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid several years ago, record fees and numbers seemed to be discussed every day. But one interesting note came from another direction – sales of his new shirt.
A transfer fee of €94 million (£80 million) brought the player from Old Trafford, but fans buying Ronaldo’s iconic kit were seemingly making up for the massive investment. It is of course difficult to say if the same impact would be felt now in the present time, but a club’s merchandise clearly sells when Ronaldo’s influence is attached.

A club that adds the star power of Cristiano Ronaldo is also bound to feel the financial effects from commercial fame, high-priced friendly tours and media events. Kit sponsors may see their contract prices go up, and brand exposure is at all-time global high.
Next: Big Manchester United move in serious jeopardy
All put together, Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer value is a monster. This is from just looking at only these key categories, and an argument is present for anywhere between €300 and €400 million.
But €1 billion? Well, maybe Manchester United and Jose Mourinho made the right decision in this case after all.
