Now it’s up to Kylian Mbappe to listen to Real Madrid
There’s no question that Real Madrid officials would like to see Kylian Mbappe play for their club eventually. However, it’s abundantly clear that Florentino Perez isn’t overly enamored with the idea of purchasing the French starlet this summer. Instead, he wants him to spend at least one more season at Monaco.
Perez’s feelings were obvious given his recent comments to the media. Real Madrid’s transfer chief told esRadio (via the Daily Mail) that Mbappe would struggle to get into his club’s starting XI next season. He very frankly stated that there just aren’t many 18-year-olds who have the ability to start for Los Blancos.
The subtext of his comments is deafening. He went on record to say he didn’t want to spend significant money to acquire players who would sit on the bench. Perez is obviously warning Mbappe that he isn’t ready for life with the La Liga giants.
The obvious solution for Mbappe would be to bide his time. He could do that by moving to another club, but the easiest path would be to remain in Monaco. Leonardo Jardim has done a terrific job managing him and he’s led the club to significant success. There’s no reason to believe that his career won’t continue to progress there.

In another season or two, he’ll likely have the maturity to make his big move to Real Madrid. Once he’s ready to be an immediate starter for Zinedine Zidane, Perez and company will be happy to pay the necessary transfer fee. It’s likely his potential cost will continue to rise, but no one at Real Madrid is going to worry themselves over that small fact. They’ll produce the funds to meet Monaco’s demands when he’s ready to play a large role.
Now the question becomes whether or not Mbappe has the maturity and/or patience to stay put for another year. One could hardly blame him for making a big money move this summer. In truth, it’s what most young starlets would do in his position.

That doesn’t mean it’s the best path for him. If he wants to become a superstar for Real Madrid he needs to heed Perez’s advice and stay put. If his career stays on the same trajectory he’s going to be able to engineer a move to the Spanish giants when the time is right. That time just isn’t this summer.
