Real Madrid and Barcelona are battling again

Bayern Munich’s best laid transfer plans are in serious jeopardy due to Real Madrid and Barcelona. The fierce La Liga rivals are expressing interest in Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka. That could keep the talented midfielder away from the Bundesliga giants next summer.

Previously, it seemed that Goretzka’s move to Bayern was almost inevitable. He’s refused to ink a new deal with Schalke and the Bundesliga champions seemed poised to scoop him up as a free transfer next summer. Unfortunately for Carlo Ancelotti, his former club is ready to complicate those plans.

Reports from Spain (via the Daily Star) claim that both Real Madrid and Barcelona are expressing interest in Goretzka. Their involvement in the transfer race may force Bayern to bid aggressively for the 22-year-old.

In fairness, Florentino Perez also had previous designs on acquiring Goretzka for free. Los Blancos now realize that isn’t a prudent plan. Instead, Perez is preparing an initial bid of £13 million to acquire Goretzka immediately. Don’t expect Schalke to be naive enough to accept the first offer.

More from Real Madrid

They realize that Barcelona are growing frustrated in their quest to sign Marco Verratti. PSG aren’t in any mood to ship the Italian midfielder to Spain. It’s very possible that Ernesto Valverde and company may need to look at other options sooner rather than later. Goretzka is just the sort of midfielder that could help Valverde’s squad get younger and more athletic.

Schalke would be wise to realize this is their last chance to receive a significant fee for their prized asset. The Bundesliga club should work to inspire a bidding war between Bayern, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Forcing three of the world’s wealthiest clubs to fight one another on the transfer market could prove to be financial windfall for the German club.
