Tottenham v Roma: 5 Spurs stars with the most at stake
1. Vincent Janssen
The Dutch striker has arrived at a crossroads. It’s time for him to put up or shut up if he wants to have a meaningful role for Tottenham this season. Janssen needs to look good and play well against Roma to build some momentum for his Spurs career.
If we’re being kind, his performance against PSG was largely anonymous. Regular readers know I’m not typically all that kind. I thought he was pretty poor. His first touch was atrocious and he didn’t do anything to bother the opposition.
That does not, however, mean I’ve completely given up hope. There are things to like about Janssen’s game. In particular, his ability to hold up play can really help galvanize the club’s attack. If he can combine that with the finishing ability he allegedly possesses, you’d have a reasonable Premier League striker.
Next: Tottenham need to rethink move for Toljan
The key word in the last sentence was “allegedly.” We assume he can score goals because he did so at an impressive club in the Eredivisie. He’s produced no evidence of that ability in England. It will ultimately be the difference between a reasonable Premier League career and a ticket out of England for Janssen.
Vincent Janssen needs a clean, skillful finish to rebuild his shattered confidence.
