This summer has been far too quiet for Tottenham

Tottenham’s sluggish preseason has Spurs fans clamoring for activity in the summer transfer window. While the club do have serious quality in their starting XI, there’s a general feeling that the squad is incomplete.

While I do urge the Tottenham fan base to take a collective deep breath after the lackadaisical showing against City, I do agree that Pep Guardiola’s side did illuminate the squad’s weaknesses with a harsh light. In some ways, that’s the idea of a productive preseason friendly.

On the other hand, suffering a 3-0 defeat to a league rival is never a comfortable reality. In truth, Spurs were lucky they didn’t concede more goals to City’s star-studded attack. Hugo Lloris’ first half heroics kept his club from heading into the break trailing by two or three goals. Let’s just sum it up by saying it was a lifeless performance from Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

If there’s a real positive from the lacklustre showing, it’s that Daniel Levy can’t deny the need for immediate investment in the squad. If he expects Pochettino to conjure his current troops into a legitimate Premier League title contender then he’s truly lost the plot. For all of Levy’s faults, he’s never suffered from delusion. My money is that he’ll back his gaffer with a couple of key summer additions.

The question then becomes where should Tottenham focus their limited transfer resources. That’s what this piece will address. Read on to discover the five most important areas Spurs should address before the transfer window slams shut.
