Chelsea FC have been drawn into a tough group with Atletico Madrid and A.S. Roma which signals the need for more reinforcements for the Blues to get out of the group.

Chelsea FC will be wise to make sure they sign more players come the end of the transfer window given their tough Champions League group.

Atletico Madrid and A.S. Roma are fantastic teams that, on paper, could easily beat the Blues.

Atletico have the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Yannick Carrasco and former Chelsea player Fernando Torres. While A.S. Roma have great players in Radja Nainggolan , Edin Dzeko and veteran Daniele De Rossi who all have the potential to change a match.

Chelsea FC also have new boys FK Qarabag which is a slight worry as new teams can often surprise many in their debut Champions League outing.

The Blues have a bit of history with Atletico after they lost to the Spanish outfit in 2014 in the semi finals of the Champions League.  Chelsea have only won one of their five games against Atletico in the competition.

On the bright side, the tough group draw should only reinforce the fact that Chelsea need more signings which should push club owner Roman Abramovich to splash more cash for more signings.

The Blues squad is looking paper-thin at the moment with a barely recognizable bench when they played Spurs at Wembley recently. While it’s good to give young players a chance, they clearly have no experience in tough competitions like the Champions League. The Blues are seriously lacking squad depth with only two wing-backs in the team while they also only have three central midfielders.

The Blues have no cover for wing-backs Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses with only Cesar Azpilicueta as the only viable option who could move over from right center back to wing-back.

Head coach Antonio Conte has repeatedly warned the board that they need more signings after letting go many young players such as Nathan Ake, Nathaniel Chalobah and Ruben Loftus Cheek on loan. They also loaned out central midfielder Lewis Baker which was a perplexing move since they now only have three central midfielders.

And with the tough group draw, it should highlight the need for more signings to the board as on paper, Chelsea will struggle to beat Atletico and Roma.

Chelsea FC have been linked with Leicester duo Jamie Vardy and Danny Drinkwater while also still working on a deal to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal who would make for an excellent wing-back at Chelsea.

Chelsea will need to sign at least three, if not four, more players if they have any chance of getting out of the group stage of the Champions League while also fighting to retain the Premier League title.

The tough group should only reinforce Conte’s plea to the board to sign more players so in terms of silver linings, this could be a good thing for Chelsea FC supporters.
