Premier league teams are on track to spend a record amount of money in the transfer market, but could one of them become the best in Europe this season.

The last English team to win the Champions League was Chelsea in 2012, and since then teams from the Premier League have struggled in the top-level of European competition. Significant amounts of money have been spent since then, including this transfer window, with the TV rights deal funding this.

The large transfer budgets have been used to attract top managers with most of them having time to settle in. They have had time to alter the squad to make it their own, and, more importantly, get the team playing in their desired style. The two Manchester teams are the favourites from England based on the profile of the manager, the squad those managers inherited and the amount they have spent on new players.

Here’s a look at the main teams in Europe who are likely to provide the biggest threat. Each team’s transfer business will be analysed as well as how they have started the domestic season.
