Liverpool have launched a club record bid for Monaco winger Thomas Lemar, according to French newspaper Lequipe, of 72 million euros. Lemar has been targeted by Arsenal throughout the summer and have had three bids already turned down but Liverpool seem to be confident that the amount of money they are offering Monaco should be enough to get the club to accept the bid, despite Monaco’s stance that they would not be selling Lemar at all this summer.

It would not be hard to imagine that Monaco could accept the bid, as they have already sold several key players this summer including Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva, Tiémoué Bakayoko, Allan Saint-Maximin among others with rumours suggesting that Kylian Mbappe could also be heading to Paris Saint-Germain as well so it is not too hard to believe that Monaco would be willing to sell another player from the first team.

The move does make sense for Liverpool, as Lemar is able to play on the wing along with being able to play in the centre of the pitch as well. Jurgen Klopp’s intense style of play requires any club that he is managing to have depth as his teams as his teams fade out as the season goes on – especially last season where Liverpool burnt out in the second half of the season. If Salah or Mane suffer from an injury or need to be rested, they can slot Lemar onto the wings and likewise in the centre of midfield.

Thomas Lemar is a great player and he was great for Monaco last season in their highly impressive run to capturing an improbable league title and semi-finals finish in the Champions League, but he is also not a player of great need to Liverpool, unless they change their stance on selling Coutinho to Barcelona. While yes, having Lemar is a great option for them throughout the season as he play various different roles throughout the team with quality, he is also the kind of player Liverpool have in spades.

They desperately require a player in defence as Liverpool’s defence has been suspect for years and was one of the key reasons for why they did not win the Premiership in the 2013/14 and has been an issue for them under Jurgen Klopp as well. It would be more beneficial for Liverpool to sign a defender, whether that is Virgil Van Dijk or somebody else – and Liverpool’s utter lack of a plan B in the event of not being able to sign Dijk is baffling- rather than another attacker but if they are going to add another player, Lemar is as good of an option as they are likely to get.

It’ll be interesting to see if Monaco do decide to sell Lemar or not, as although they have sold several players this season who were vital in their massively successful season, Monaco have rejected bids all summer from Arsenal and seem insistent on keeping Lemar. There is only a week left in this transfer window and a lot will happen in it to complete an insane transfer window where everything has happened.
