1. Barkley may not heal

There’s a distinct possibility that Ross Barkley won’t participate in a Premier League match before the January transfer window opens. He should be back sometime in November, but he’s suffering from a substantial hamstring injury. Any setback could prevent him from passing a medical with Spurs in 2018.

There’s even a small possibility that Barkley will never recover to his previous form. Hamstring injuries for a player of his size are a huge concern. It may be the sort of knock that plagues him for the rest of his career.

I take no delight in bringing up this possibility, but the reality is Tottenham cannot afford to purchase another injured star. The club are already suffering from the curse of Erik Lamela and Danny Rose’s sordid injuries. Adding another player who might be damaged goods just isn’t going to work for Pochettino and company.

Next: Did Tottenham really improve this summer?

If Ross Barkley wants to engineer a move to Tottenham this season he will need to pay close attention to his health. The most important thing he can do is make sure his hamstring has enough time to fully heal. If it doesn’t, he may struggle to secure a move to Spurs or any other top six Premier League club this winter.
