Jan Vertonghen-9

Harry Kane managed to score two goals but for me, Jan Vertonghen was the Man of the Match. His play on both ends of the pitch was crucial to his club’s ability to walk away with all three points.

In the first half, it was his marauding run forward that really allowed Spurs to break the deadlock. He continues to take advantage of Davinson Sanchez’s protection to participate more in Tottenham’s attack. It was a truly masterful performance from the Belgian against West Ham.

Toby Alderweireld-6.5

While Vertonghen was exceptional, Alderweireld was pretty average in this match. He didn’t necessarily do anything wrong, but he didn’t do a ton right for his club either.

Some might consider this rating a little harsh, but the club did give up two goals. Additionally, Alderweireld didn’t provide Serge Aurier enough support on several occasions. Add it all up and it was a pretty mediocre match for Alderweireld.

Davinson Sanchez-6.5

In many ways, Sanchez was the most difficult player to evaluate in this match. As a rugged central defender he’s never going to offer beautiful performances. This match was certainly no exception.

To his credit, he prevented West Ham from really establishing aerial superiority while the two squads were on equal terms. Only after Aurier’s red card did things really get dicey in front of goal. Sanchez deserves extra credit for doing just enough to put Andy Carroll off when he looked prepared to tie the match in extra time.
