Real Madrid are the right choice for Timo Werner

Timo Werner is going to draw significant transfer interest from both Real Madrid and Barcelona this summer. In the end, the RB Leipzig attacker must make the wise choice and snub the Catalan giants in favor of Los Blancos.

Both La Liga clubs reportedly see the German star as an ideal addition for their respective attacking corps. It’s easy to see why. His play for the Bundesliga upstarts over the past two seasons has been nothing short of magnificent. He’s one of Germany’s brightest young talents.

Assuming both clubs are willing to pay Leipzig a massive transfer fee, the striker will be left with quite an interesting decision to make. Which La Liga power represents the best place for him to further his football career?

For me, the answer is quite obvious. With all due respect to the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, the sun is setting on their time on top of Spanish football. Both players are on the wrong side of 30 years of age. The prime of Barcelona’s attack is in the past.

In fairness, several of Real Madrid’s most prominent attackers are advancing in age as well. Cristiano Ronaldo is playing great football this season, but his game will inevitably slow down soon at his age. Gareth Bale, the man brought in to ease the transition away from CR7, has seen injuries slow his game down as well.

More from Real Madrid

The difference between Real Madrid and Barcelona is that Los Blancos have properly cultivated the next generation of their attack. They don’t necessarily need to go out into the transfer market and spend a fortune to replace Ronaldo and company. The next wave of attacking talent is already present at the Bernabeu.

Specifically, Isco and Marco Asensio give Zinedine Zidane’s club an obvious plan B after their current superstars lose effectiveness due to age. Both stars have already proven they’re capable of producing in big matches. There’s little doubt that Real Madrid can effectively pivot away from Ronaldo and Bale to the combination of Isco and Asensio. Both younger stars also happen to be locked down with new contracts.

Timo Werner has to look at the two situations and try to project each club’s future. When he does that, it’s pretty obvious that Real Madrid are the superior option. Not only would he have an opportunity to come in and immediately displace Karim Benzema as the club’s starter, but he’d also have a chance to form the new attacking wave at the club.

The same opportunity does not exist for him at Barcelona. Ernesto Valverde isn’t as far along with his project as Zidane. After Messi and Suarez age out of top form, Barcelona will need to move quickly to secure new stars. There’s no reason for Werner to cast his lot with their hopes of acquiring world-class players in the future.

Barcelona fans won’t like reading this, but Timo Werner should snub their advances this summer. His footballing future would be much more secure at Real Madrid.
