2. Eric Dier

I can feel the collective blood pressure of Tottenham fans rising as they see Dier’s name pop up on this list. He is a very solid player, but he’s not the world-class performer that some Spurs fans seem to believe he is.

If we’re being completely honest, Dier had a pretty rough season last year. Whether you believe he was fatigued or simply a victim of being switched back and forth between the midfield and defense, he was pretty average at best. There were quite a few matches where he looked like one of the club’s weakest starters.

Fortunately, he’s shown positive signs of regaining his top form this season. A string of good matches has his Whoscored.com rating up to 7.0. That’s good for sixth in the squad. That’s pretty good, but it’s fair to expect more from a player who anchors the defensive midfield for England.

Part of Dier being near the top of this list is the high expectations I, and the rest of the club’s fan base, have for him. Dier has the talent to be one of the best midfielders in Europe. It’s time for his performances to approach that level.
