Tottenham’s five most underrated players-Can Harry Kane really be underappreciated?
3. Davinson Sanchez
I’m a little stunned at the lack of attention Davinson Sanchez’s play has received thus far. He’s found a way to immediately join Pochettino’s starting XI and has bolstered the club’s already stingy defense. That’s an amazing accomplishment for a 21-year-old defender.
Perhaps everyone expected this sort of play since Sanchez arrived as the club’s most expensive transfer ever. Then again, that honour was previously held by Erik Lamela and Moussa Sissoko. Tottenham fans expecting great play due to a transfer fee seems rather illogical.
In fairness, Sanchez hasn’t needed to play exceptional football. The game is pretty simple for him. His job is to serve as the last line of defence in front of keeper Hugo Lloris. He also receives the benefit of playing between Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in the Spurs’ back line.
I suspect the ease of his responsibilities is what causes him to be underrated. Heading the ball out of danger or clearing the ball towards the sideline aren’t skills that fill Wembley with adoring fans. That doesn’t change how important he is to the team though. Sanchez deserves more credit for Tottenham’s outstanding defence.
