2. Christian Eriksen

Eriksen is almost the complete opposite of Davinson Sanchez. His game is predicated almost entirely on beautiful plays. The fact that he doesn’t produce moments of world-class magic every week gets on the nerves of quite a few Spurs fans.

I have to admit that sometimes I fall into this category. You see the brilliant plays Eriksen can make and it’s natural to crave them on a regular basis. That’s just not realistic though. The only player I’ve ever seen who can make those sorts of magical plays on a routine basis is Lionel Messi.

Eriksen is obviously not at that level. On the other hand, Eriksen does regularly contribute lots of things for Tottenham that aren’t that easy to see. Go back and watch a Spurs match where you don’t feel like Eriksen played that well. Watch the runs he constantly makes to create space for his teammates. Watch him track back to nick the ball off the opposition. The subtlety of his game is very underappreciated.

Christian Eriksen gets lots of plaudits when he’s at his best, but it’s time for everyone to realize that his “average” performances are pretty terrific too. There’s a reason he’s so important for Pochettino’s attack.
