Tottenham’s five most underrated players-Can Harry Kane really be underappreciated?
1. Jan Vertonghen
When Toby Alderweireld first arrived at Tottenham, Spurs fans immediately fell in love with his class and poise. He was certainly the club’s top centre back during his first season. However, Jan Vertonghen has upped his game over the past year and change and now he’s the best Belgian at Spurs.
He’s been brilliant through the club’s first seven Premier League matches this year. His Whoscored.com player rating average of 7.26 is the fifth highest in the squad. That’s an exceptional rating for a central defender who hasn’t scored a goal or notched an assist.
His growing confidence has almost been tangible as this season has progressed. The presence of Sanchez playing next to him has given him more freedom to join the attack than ever before. It’s only a matter of time before he scores a goal or provides an assist for a teammate.
Defensively, he hasn’t put a foot wrong all season. His excellence is a big reason why Ben Davies has been able to play so well in place of Danny Rose. The Welshman needs a centre back who can help cover up for his lack of pace. Vertonghen bails Davies out of trouble several times every match.

Toby Alderweireld is still a brilliant centre back, but he’s not the best defender at Spurs any longer. That honour must go to Jan Vertonghen.
