2. The timing of Klopp’s arrival

Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp both inherited fairly mediocre sides. Prior to Rodgers’s arrival, Liverpool had finished 8th in the league and earned a disappointing tally of only 52 points.

Rodgers left Liverpool in a similar position when Klopp accepted the Liverpool job. Rodgers’s side ended the previous season with a humiliating 6-1 defeat at Stoke, and showed little signs of progression in the early matches of the next season.

Though the side was in a pretty poor state prior to their appointments, Klopp’s work with the side was far more impressive than Rodgers was. Though Klopp had no preseason to implement his style of play in his new side, he reached two finals, and after thrilling victories over Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund, was 45 minutes away from the guiding Liverpool back into the Champions League.

Rodgers, who had a preseason, was unable to produce a challenge for any major trophy in his first year in charge.

It is only Klopp’s second full year in charge. While Rodgers currently holds the record, in his initial 73 matches, he has had far more time to form his squad than Klopp did. After two full seasons in charge, it may well be the German whose record is superior.
