Arjen Robben

Holland failed to qualify for a second consecutive major tournament as they deal with a fundamental crisis in Dutch football. They finished third in their group behind France and Sweden.

Going into the last game they needed to win at least 7-1 over Sweden who were their direct competitors for the second spot. They managed to win 2-0, but it wasn’t enough. After the match, Robben announced his retirement from international football.

More from World Cup

The Bayern winger will be missed especially after he starred in a Dutch team under Louis Van Gaal which managed to reach the semi-finals in 2014.

His performance against world champions Spain, in the group stages, was a masterclass in counter-attacking play. The Dutch were rampant as they came away with a 5-1 win, and Robben scored two of those.

He is an expert at cutting inside from the right side to shoot from the edge of the box with his deadly left foot. The World Cup won’t be the same without Robben and the Dutch with their exciting style of play. Although, Oranje have been missing for a while as they are a shadow of their former self.
