With the Ballon d’Or nominations out, it’s time to look at and rank the top five players from the nomination list.
It’s that time of year again, the time of year where great debate flares up from football fans all over the world where everybody begins to debate, argue and discuss over who will win the Ballon d’Or, the biggest individual award that a football can win and one that decides who is the greatest footballer on planet earth throughout the year.
For almost a decade, there hasn’t been much competition over the award with the only two winners being Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, two of the greatest footballers of all time and the biggest rivalry in the sport. Every year, we know that the award will come down to these two great footballers although there have been occasions where somebody has gotten close to breaking the dynasty that these two have created.
Many an argument can be made that Wesley Sneijder winning in 2010 or Frank Ribery in 2013, when both players won a treble with their respective teams in Inter Milan and Bayern Munich and perhaps they should have won the award. It is hard to know what the criteria even is for this award – is it based on form and performance? Based on accomplishments throughout the year? A mixture of both? If it is, Sneijder and Ribery certainly should have won those awards but alas, this was not the case.
Alas, it almost seems like in recent years that we’ve known who was going to win the Ballon d’Or entirely on who won the Champions League or the World Cup, but this year feels closer despite the immense success of Real Madrid this year. Obviously, the battle will likely come down to both Ronaldo and Messi again, two of the greatest players of all time, but it is important to recognise other players who deserve to be mentioned alongside them for their performances in 2017.
In the end though, it’s important to note that this article will be judging it on a mixture of both performance and accomplishments. So thhis list will be in order of who should finish in the top five for the Ballon d’Or award.
