David Luiz

This is a tough one because Luiz is so likable.  That though is where he has been let down for years.  Luiz because of his charming smile and perfect personality has been left off the hook time and time again.  It’s a terrible thing happening to the man and it must stop.

David Luiz was just dropped by Brazil.  Finally.

He’s an incredibly gifted footballer.  His technique is sublime and he’s more athletic than most gazelles but the mental side of his game is so poor that it’s saddening.  Luiz’s concentration levels are low and his judgement is poor.  It’s true last season he was wonderful but does it shock anyone that he’s been at best awful this season?

Defenders need to be consistent, dependable, smart and tough.  It’s a position in which talent can at times be substituted for pure simple work ethic, selflessness and commitment.  David Luiz has this balance all wrong.  He could be perhaps the best defender in the world or at least on a level with his Brazilian compatriot Thiago Silva.  But where Silva is a rock of dedication and commitment Luiz is apparently off chasing thrills and following his instincts too much.

Luiz could be phenomenal but at age 30 he’s making the mistakes that an 18-year-old learning the game makes.  It’s time for Chelsea to cut the cord.
