Oh my, talk about a polarizing guy. Many people wanted to get rid of the Belgian after Louis Van Gaal’s last season but he has seemingly filled a gap under Mourinho. But that’s all he is–a role player. He seems to have the qualities of different positions mixed into one guy. He has the touch of a forward but his lack of quickness and tremendous size almost make him lean more towards a defender.

The biggest place where he helps out is on set pieces, both offensive and defensive, but he leaves a lot to be desired elsewhere. Unlike some guys on the team he has a decent ability to finish but he’s just such a clunky presence that those opportunities seem to be few and far between. He is a towering presence in the midfield but smaller and faster players can get around him pretty easily. He also accumulates a lot of yellow cards and at some point his temper will cost the team in a big game.

It’s a huge credit to Mourinho that he figured out a way to use his unique abilities. At his height few guys can match him on headers. But he looks like a rotational guy and not a starter. But nonetheless I think he’s a good guy to have because he can come in and create matchup problems.
