Tottenham failed to show up on offence without Kane

Mauricio Pochettino knew his team would have to adjust to life without Harry Kane. Unfortunately his Spurs attack utterly failed their first exam at Manchester United. The listless performance gifted United three points and second place in the Premier League table.

In fairness to Spurs, their defensive performance was excellent for the vast majority of the match. One mental error by the combination of Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier gave Anthony Martial the space he needed to win the match for United. Without that moment of weakness, Tottenham would have walked away with a decent enough point.

Spurs never really looked like winning the match though. The only real chance they created was squandered by Dele Alli as he pushed his half volley wide in the second half. It was a difficult chance for the precocious Englishman, which illustrates just how lifeless Tottenham’s attack was on the day.

Many fans will criticize Dele for failing to grab the match, but Christian Eriksen deserves more criticism. The classy Dane was a disaster in the first half and was decidedly mediocre in the second. Pochettino need more from him without Kane and instead he got less. Read on to discover Eriksen and his teammates’ individual player ratings from the bitter defeat at Old Trafford.
