Premier League analysis: Ranking England’s top managers
Mark Hughes
It’s not that Mark Hughes is a bad manager. He’s just not as good as the other managers on this list. He has never really taken a club to new heights and doesn’t show a phenomenal difference in any of the teams he’s managed.
The truth is Mark Hughes seems to be a very good ambassador for a club and supervisor of players. If a team builds a good enough squad then with Mark Hughes they will meet their expectations. They won’t generally underachieve but they won’t blow the roof off their expectations either.
Hughes was a phenomenal footballer and it can sometimes be hard to manage in that sense after a phenomenal playing career. It can be hard for people for whom things were so easy and so natural to understand the flaws of those with less natural talent than they. It makes the communication a lot harder at times.
Mark Hughes is not a bad manager he just doesn’t seem to be an a great one either.
