Liverpool v Everton: Merseyside derby combined XI
By David Gate
Liverpool and Everton face off this weekend in the Merseyside derby at Anfield. But which players would make a combined XI of the two teams?
It is one of the oldest rivalries in football. And one of the fiercest. These two ever-present Premier League sides have been at each other on Merseyside since 1892. They are famously less than a mile apart; across Stanley Park.
In recent seasons they have been close in the table. Everton have finished inside the top seven in five of the last seven seasons. At the same time Liverpool have only been in the top four on two occasions in that time; most recently last season.
This year has brought a larger gap between the two sides. Everton are in 10th place but were in the relegation zone only two weeks ago, losing seven of their first 13 games. Liverpool on the other hand are in fourth with only two losses. They come into this game in fine form after thrashing Brighton 5-0 and Spartak Moscow 7-0 in the last two games.
Everton recently fired Ronald Koeman after the poor start to a season of expectation after a £150 million spending spree this summer. Now disgraced ex-England manager Sam Allardyce is manning the sideline for the Toffees.
For this combined XI we have chosen a 433 formation which is most similar to how the teams have played this season. We have also chosen only those who are fit an eligible this weekend. That means no Seamus Coleman, Adam Lallana or Joel Matip.
