5. Real Madrid v Manchester United

I’ve selected this tie for a number of different reasons, not just to have a giant killing early on in the knockout rounds. These two clubs can be considered contenders for this years Champions League trophy, so it will be interesting to see them face off and determine who is really worthy.

Not only that, but I’ve also chosen these two so Manchester United can face a real test. The Europa League was starved of real competition last season, so some would say they had a relatively easy route to the final. In regards to the Champions League this year, they got lucky with the calibre of teams they were facing.

On their day, Manchester United can beat anyone, so I certainly wouldn’t overlook their chances at playing the champions. This tie has already been played once this season, in the UEFA Super Cup final, a game in which Real Madrid won 2-1.

Jose Mourinho would be returning to face his old club once again, with fellow Portuguese, Cristiano Ronaldo, doing the same. The Manchester United manager will be hoping to make his name known again, and we all know what he’s capable of when he really wants something.

My prediction

Although I believe Manchester United are capable of pulling out a surprise against any level of competition, I would have to predict a loss on their behalf should this be a Champions League draw.
