With Manchester United struggling for any type of form at the moment the question has been raised in recent weeks that it may be time for their esteemed manager Jose Mourinho to leave.  Is it time?

No.

Club’s too often push the emergency button and fire the manager without having a better option.  If Manchester United fire Jose Mourinho now is there another readily available manager who they think could better track down Pep Guardiola?  No there isn’t.

Manchester United have been wildly disappointing and Mourinho’s recent claims that he doesn’t have enough money or the squad to challenge Pep Guardiola are incredibly grating.  His job as manager it to find a way to win.  He can’t always outspend his rivals and sometimes will have to improve players.

Manchester United already have one of the most expensively assembled squads in the history of football.  Their issues this season have been far more down to bad luck, poor form, discipline and injuries.

Manchester City are playing some of the best football that has ever been played in the Premier League.  That’s very true.  Manchester United probably won’t catch them this season.  But that doesn’t mean that football will end if City win this year. United have to catch them next year.

To fire Mourinho would be a step in the wrong direction.  He has a proven track record and will eventually win the Premier League if United stick with him.

The problem is that the competition is so strong in the Premier League and the stakes are so high.  There are 4 Champions League spots and six strong teams.  Two will always miss out regardless of whether or not they’ve had a bad season.

In other years Manchester United’s points total would be enough to challenge for the title and they’d probably be at the top of the league now.  City are playing historically good football.  There’s nothing wrong with that.  It’s true Mourinho does seem more gruff and angry than his usual Machiavellian charming self but he’s upset.  He’s a competitor.  United aren’t leading the division but they’re in second.

If Mourinho was fired by Manchester United it would be the final straw to prove Ed Woodward had lost his mind.  He’s already essentially handed over the running of his team to Mino Raiola firing one of the best managers of all time who is still competing with vigor in the Champions League and in second place in the division behind a historic side would be insane.

Mourinho will eventually win if Manchester United stick with him.  They can’t rock the boat and return to the foundations with a new manager.  The landscape in the Premier League has changed.  It’s no longer they and Arsenal bullying everyone else it’s harder to win now.  Mourinho will eventually.
