Davinson Sanchez-6

It’s easy to crucify Sanchez for putting the ball into the back of his own net. Yes, he could have done better with the cross, but he was unlucky to see the ball slide past Vorm. Frequently that sort of play results in a smart clearance.

Focusing on the own goal also ignores what Sanchez did during the rest of the match. He made several key challenges that snuffed out promising Southampton attacks. Yes, his positioning could be better, but that’s no reason to slate his effectiveness. His rating gets justifiably dinged for the own goal, but it was still a solid performance by the Colombian defender.

Jan Vertonghen-6.5

This wasn’t Vertonghen’s best match either. He didn’t make a catastrophic error like Sanchez, but he looked really out of sorts for most of the match.

Go back and watch how many times Vertonghen was forced to pull out of a potentially rash challenge at the last-minute. It’s never good when your centre back spends so much time on the ground. Fortunately for him, none of his questionable decisions came back to haunt him or his team.
