The Premier League Champions attempts to bring Eden Dzeko and Emerson Palmieri could be over already.

Chelsea have been dealt a major crucial blow in their attempts to lure Edin Dzeko and Emerson Palmieri from Roma with reports in Italy indicting that a move for both players could now be off. In a month that has been highly confusing from Chelsea, with them being linked to nearly every single striker in England, it looked apparent that they would reach a deal to bring in former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko.

Dzeko, despite his age, would certainly be a much better striker than any that Chelsea had currently been linked with for the entirety of the window and better than who they currently have in Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi as well, with Dzeko arguably being the best striker in the Serie A last season.

Both moves make sense but Chelsea seem to be cooling interest after they have struggled to get Roma and the players to agree to a price. Roma’s Director of Football in Monchi criticised Chelsea’s offers for Dzeko as not being enough while Chelsea are also refusing to give Dzeko a contract longer than eighteen months.

It does make sense why Chelsea would not want to tie down Dzeko for too long a contract given that he will be turning thirty-two soon enough, but there is only less than a week left in the transfer window and Chelsea have so far only brought in Ross Barkley – a player who has missed the entire first half of the season through injury and will take some time getting back up to match fitness and getting used to Conte’s system.

More from Chelsea FC

If Chelsea miss out on both Dzeko and Emerson Palmieri, this will be another disaster of a transfer window from the league champions. Their summer window was a mess with them failing to adequately address the issues that they had in a lack of squad depth and this window has only been an even bigger disaster.

It’s easy to see the issues that Antonio Conte is having with the Chelsea board and why he has been at lengths with them since the summer. Chelsea’s transfer policies in the last couple of years since Financial Fair Play was introduced has been quite odd to say the least and the quality of players that they are bringing in is simply not good enough while haggling over players that should be brought in.

Both Manchester clubs are strengthening themselves this month, along with Liverpool finally bringing in their desired defender while Chelsea find themselves a mess on and off the pitch.

It’ll be an interesting final week of the window for Chelsea but it is now looking unlikely that they will sell either Roma player and are now making moves for Paris Saint-Germain’s Layvin Kurzawa.
