Why a move to Inter Milan makes no sense for Sturridge

Open to a move aboard and linked with a move to Inter Milan, it isn’t an option that makes much sense for Daniel Sturridge and would only serve as a hindrance to his career.

Daniel Sturridge has been linked with a move away from Anfield this transfer window; with a rumoured move away from England to Serie A side Inter Milan.

The move would likely be a loan move with an option to buy at the end of the season. Sturridge has struggled to find consistent minutes at Liverpool for several seasons now with regular injuries hampering his availability to Liverpool and said injuries have seemed to have taken a toll on him as a player as well.

Sturridge on his day is a phenomenal striker and he played a key and vastly underrated role in Liverpool’s title challenger in the 2013-14 season. Luis Suarez may have taken all of the plaudits for that remarkable season, Sturridge was just as equally important to the team and when Suarez was initially suspended at the start of the season, it was Sturridge who was scoring the goals to carry Liverpool.

His injuries have caught up with him rendering Sturridge to no longer be the same player that he once was. His game time has stagnated due to his performances and the fact that Roberto Firmino is much better suited to Jurgen Klopp’s system than Sturridge is.

A loan move away from Anfield is ideal for him, allowing him to get the game time that he desperately needs to rebuild his career especially with a World Cup coming up this summer. Sturridge being open to a move abroad could also be good for him, it allows him to move away from England to try a different culture and a different style of football.

The issue is, moving to Inter Milan is not the solution for him. Sturridge would not be a guaranteed striker in Inter Milan’s team, they already have one of the best strikers in the world in Mauro Icardi and they would not drop him for anybody in the world. Sturridge is in desperate need of minutes on the pitch and being a rotation option for Icardi is not what he needs nor is it what Liverpool needs either.

Liverpool may want Sturridge off the books in the summer but if he is not playing regularly, he isn’t going to entice anybody to pay for him when he isn’t paying, leaving Liverpool to be stuck paying his wages and taking up a spot that could go towards another player.

Sturridge being open to going out on loan and moving away from England is admirable but he needs to be smart about where he goes too next. This is his opportunity to regain lost momentum, to show that he can still be a top class centre forward and he will not have that opportunity by sitting on the bench every week at the San Siro hoping for an injury or long suspension for Icardi. This is not a move that makes any kind of sense for Sturridge and will only result in more lost time for him and could be a major factor as to why he will not end up making Gareth Southgate’s final twenty-three man squad for Russia this summer.
