Defensive Midfielder-Harry Winks

This is the perfect match to ease Winks back into first team competition. He’s recently rejoined first team training but Pochettino knows he needs some match time before he’s thrown back into the fire.

More from Playing for 90

His ability to quickly move the ball around the pitch should help Spurs avoid stagnation. The more he’s able to get on the ball and drive it forward, the better off Tottenham will be. Winks won’t be 100%, but he should take a step towards his Premier League return with a solid performance.

Defensive Midfielder-Victor Wanyama

Wanyama will be hard-pressed to create the same sort of magical moment he produced against Liverpool in this one. Fortunately for Spurs, they shouldn’t need him to fire any rockets into the net to get past Newport.

Pochettino will be much more concerned with Wanyama’s mobility. There’s a reason he hasn’t been inserted back into the Premier League starting XI yet. A good, fit, shift against Newport will get him back into the frame for a starting spot in the league.
