Centre Back-Toby Alderweireld

Ordinarily, a player of Alderweireld’s quality wouldn’t have much to prove in a match like this. This isn’t an ordinary circumstance though. The talented Belgian will be using this fixture as a live audition to get into Pochettino’s starting XI against Arsenal this weekend.

Tottenham fans will certainly hope he passes this test with flying colors. In fairness, it shouldn’t be a difficult assignment. Spurs will enjoy the lion’s share of possession which should allow Alderweireld to do what he does best. Look for the skilled defender to spray the ball all over the field in an effort to unlock Newport’s conservative defense.

Centre Back-Juan Foyth

Foyth will be gutted to be knocked out of the Champions League squad by Lucas Moura, but he’s still going to be a part of Tottenham’s future. That’s why Pochettino will want to make sure his young countryman is involved in this one.

He will just need to keep things simple. The last thing Foyth needs to do is to overreact to being axed from the Champions League squad. Trying to overdo things against Newport would be a quick way to find himself in Pochettino’s doghouse.
