Los Blancos are still intent on strengthening courtesy of the Premier League

Real Madrid and Manchester United have quite the transfer history. For many seasons, the Spanish side have been sniffing around David de Gea, however Manchester United have stood firm on their stance. Many believe that Real Madrid are interested in signing Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is never one to give up easily, however Independent have reported that he could look at the Belgian shot-stopper as a possibility instead of David de Gea.

Thibaut Courtois has experience in Madrid, having spent three years out on loan to Atletico Madrid. The Belgian has enjoyed a fruitful time in London, lifting the Premier League title on two occasions.

Courtois has kept twelve clean sheets so far in the Premier League this season, which is only bettered by none other than David de Gea.

The Belgian shot-stopper only has one year remaining on his contract, and with his family being situated in Spain, Real Madrid are looking at this as likelier than finally landing David de Gea.

Let’s compare

Whilst many will prefer David de Gea, Thibaut Courtois shouldn’t be overlooked. Both have notable strengths and weaknesses, which are important to mention.

David de Gea is seen as the perfect goalkeeper in England. There has been many times in which he’s salvaged a point or three for Manchester United. As a goalkeeper, this can often go overlooked.

More from Real Madrid

However, as his early days will emphasise, the Spaniard still has notable flaws. Being beaten at his near post is a particular part of his game which is often exploited. Whether it’s a case of being caught off-guard, or simply an omen of his, this isn’t ideal. Thibaut Courtois also, obviously, has his imperfections.

One thing that can be said for both of them is, they are absolutely phenomenal with shots inside the box. David de Gea’s athletic style allows him to get from one edge of the goal to the other whenever necessary, with Thibaut Courtois using his immense height to his advantage.

This could be put to the test with Madrid. La Liga is renowned for its fast flowing, intricate passing. Where it’s rare to see a Premier League side adopt such a philosophy, it’s a lot more common in Spain.

To give my conclusion, I would obviously be in favour of Real Madrid signing David de Gea – who wouldn’t? That said, I still believe Thibaut Courtois could endure another successful stint in Madrid, should the rumour be true.
