Tottenham will revisit signing Malcom this summer

Mauricio Pochettino came ever so close to signing Malcom for Tottenham in January, but Bordeaux weren’t willing to let him go. Per the talented Brazilian starlet, his circumstances will change drastically this summer.

Malcom claims that Bordeaux officials have promised that he can leave this summer and choose his next club. In theory, that should set off a significant bidding war among several Premier League clubs. Spurs will need to fight off the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United to win the exciting attacker’s signature.

As you’ll recall, Pochettino told Malcom’s representatives that he could turn him into one of Europe’s top attackers if he makes the move to Tottenham. The manager’s strong belief in Malcom may give Spurs a healthy advantage in the race to sign him this summer. Note, Malcom didn’t just guarantee that he’d be permitted to leave Bordeaux this summer. The clear statement that he will be allowed to choose his next club should give Tottenham fans significant hope.

That doesn’t mean he’ll come to Spurs on the cheap. Bordeaux understand they have a bright talent on their hands and they’ll want to be compensated accordingly. It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if Tottenham were forced to break their transfer record to bring Malcom to North London. Whether or not Daniel Levy will be willing to sanction that sort of bid this summer is an entirely different question.

Much of that will depend on Pochettino’s ability to secure Spurs Champions League football again next season. Playing on Europe’s grandest stage is a financial windfall for any club. That revenue stream would be particularly important to Tottenham as they try to strengthen their squad and pay for their shiny new stadium at the same time. Pochettino won’t be given a blank cheque to sign new talent, so he’ll need to pick and choose his targets carefully.

Expect Malcom to remain at or near the top of Pochettino’s shopping list. He’s an exciting, young attacker that Pochettino can mold into exactly the sort of two-way midfielder he builds on a regular basis. Malcom will score goals no matter where he signs, but a move to Tottenham would allow him to truly round out his game.

A lot can change between now and the summer transfer window, but don’t expect rumours of Malcom’s interest in Tottenham to die down any time soon. It’s a deal that simply makes too much sense for everyone involved.
