West Brom launch internal investigation into four players’ Barcelona antics. Four senior Albion squad members apologise after bizarre incident
All is not well at The Hawthorns, and it appears they have exported their bad luck abroad. Gareth Barry, Jonny Evans, Jake Livermore and Boaz Myhill’s behaviour became a police incident in Spain. West Brom announced its own examination of the events.
The four players from the Premier League’s bottom-club gave a statement implicating themselves to Spanish police. They claim a desire to distance their innocent teammates after a taxi was stolen. Part of the statement is as follows,
“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise to our team-mates, the Head Coach, the Club and especially the supporters for the events which have been the subject of widespread and negative publicity.
“We felt it important we identify ourselves as the players involved in an incident which occurred during the training camp in Spain this week out of respect for team-mates…”
Facts we know
Catalan regional police force have stated that the four players in question wanted fast-food. They hired a taxi for the journey to a restaurant post curfew. Allegedly they then took the hire-car without consent at approximately 5:30am.
After returning to their hotel with the car minus its owner/driver, the police were alerted by hotel staff. The taxi was back in its owners’ possession at approximately 8:00am.
West Brom manager Alan Pardew was far from impressed with the players’ conduct. Yet he refused to comment further until their enquiry ends.
“We’ve gone there to try to get ourselves ready and up for the run-in and this is obviously not ideal.”
The police have finished their investigation and reportedly passed all findings to a Judge. Apparently there were no arrests only interviews. This feels a little unjust as wealthy celebrities should be treated as any of us.
Three of the players were surprisingly included in Saturday’s FA Cup match-day squad. Evans and Barry started while Myhill was a substitute. Livermore is not involved. They face Southampton in the 5th round.
