Tottenham will battle Bayern for Malcom

Many Spurs officials believed they had an agreement with Bordeaux to bring Malcom to North London this January. Unfortunately, it now appears that Spurs will be forced to tangle with Bayern Munich for the Brazilian starlet’s signature this summer.

Telefoot are reporting that the Bundesliga powers have recently entered the race to sign the talented wide man. Tottenham, Arsenal and several other Premier League clubs remain squarely in the frame, but the competition is growing more complicated by the moment. The list of Malcom suitors could easily get much longer before the talented goal scorer makes his move.

This news won’t be met with much enthusiasm or surprise by Mauricio Pochettino and company. The Argentine gaffer is a massive believer in Malcom’s talent. He reportedly told the Brazilian’s entourage that he believed he could turn Malcom into one of the top attackers in Europe in just a few seasons.

That confidence had previously led Tottenham officials to feel comfortable that they were in a strong position to sign Malcom this summer. The entrance of Bayern into the fray could throw a wrench into Pochettino’s plays. It’s difficult to turn down the Bundesliga power due to their ability to win trophies and pay massive wages. Spurs hope to be able to compete on the trophy front soon, but they don’t figure to equal Bayern’s wage structure anytime soon.

Not surprisingly, Spurs will leave things up to Pochettino to clinch this deal in the summer. It’s worth noting that the club’s recent purchase of Lucas Moura significantly lessens their need to bring Malcom into the fold. Pochettino will still be keen to add such a talented youngster to his attacking corps, but it’s not as if his squad will be incomplete if a deal doesn’t get done.

It’s also unclear at this point just how interested Bayern are. The German giants aren’t even sure who their manager will be next season. The identity of their next boss is likely to have a significant influence on who their summer targets really are. Malcom could be well down their wish list.

The one thing we know for sure is that Bordeaux are going to field a lot of calls about their prize attacker this summer. Tottenham hope they’ll win the race, but it could require a massive bid to fend off the likes of Bayern, Arsenal and several other European powers.
