Luke Shaw leaving Manchester United would be best for both parties

Luke Shaw is set to leave Manchester United in the summer after the latest row erupted between the defender and Jose Mourinho.

The England international was hooked at half time by his manager during his side’s FA Cup win over Brighton. After the game, Mourinho was critical of Shaw, who once again put in a poor shift. Shaw looked unfit, off the pace and lethargic. And while Mourinho’s words were a tad too harsh, the Manchester United left back hasn’t done anything on the pitch to set the world alight.

While many are sympathetic to Shaw, especially considering the double leg break he suffered in 2015, his performances since have failed to prove his worth to United. Mourinho isn’t the first manager to publicly criticize Shaw. Louis van Gaal told Shaw to train alone and get fit, less than a month after the duo joined Manchester United in 2014.

The 22-year old has also been blasted by pundits for his lack of fitness and his poor lifestyle by pundits. And it’s not like Shaw is in the first year of his professional career. He has been at United for three and a half years and has been injured or unfit for the most of it. While no one can blame him for the horror leg break he suffered, it seems that he is not mentally strong enough to play at this level.

Shaw’s lack of commitment is the polar opposite of the man who replaced him at half time on Saturday. Ashley Young has shown his commitment and desire time and time again. Despite not being a full back, Young’s fight and commitment to the cause has helped him save his United career from the brink.

It’s a pity that things haven’t worked out for Shaw at United. At Southampton, he was one of the best young prospects in the world. Perhaps, he needs to move to a club in the bottom half of the table and get a fresh start there.

The onus is on him to save his career, and being out of the limelight will help him. Shaw is still 22, so there is plenty of time left for him to revive his career. And considering how good he can be, he must realize his potential and go about to achieve it.

Shaw has simply failed to adapt to the demands at Manchester United and he must move on, and neither the club nor the player can have any complaints. What are your thoughts on the situation?
