Simone Inzaghi: The mastermind behind Lazio’s rise
Simone Inzaghi is in the midst of a fantastic season at the helm of I Biancocelesti.
Overshadowed by his brother Filippo as a player, who was one of the top strikers in the world at his peak, Inzaghi’s managerial career started out in a similar manner. Promoted to first-team manager in April 2016 after managing the reserve teams; the Lazio board brought in Marcelo Bielsa during the summer afterwards. Luckily for Inzaghi, and Lazio, the eccentric Bielsa reneged on the agreement after two days.
Bielsa’s reputation precedes him even if his eccentricity has started to hinder him more than helping in recent seasons. His recent spell at Lille was a disaster even though he was given a lot of freedom. The radical ideas he adheres to are exciting and have helped revolutionise modern football. Unfortunately, other managers appear to be better at utilising them such as Pep Guardiola and Jorge Sampaoli.
His departure has been Lazio’s gain, though, because due to that they have kept one of the most promising young managers in world football. Inzaghi was reinstated as manager, after the Argentine left, where he has been ever since. The 42-year-old has only been at the club for two years, but he has made significant progress while having to deal with some of his best players leaving such as Keita Balde and Lucas Biglia.
They currently reside in third place in Serie A with seven games remaining, and they have played both teams above them. Although they still have Inter and Roma to play who are both just below them in the table. The Derby della Capitale is actually their next game in the league. However, they have the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Salzburg to focus on first; they won the first leg 4-2 at home.
