The United manager’s reaction to his side’s loss to West Brom is pathetic

Jose Mourinho has always been a polarizing figure. He is more than capable of accepting praise and accolades. However, when things don’t go well the manager has no problem passing the buck and throwing others under the bus. It happened again this weekend.

Last week the Red Devils showed some heart in their comeback victory at the Etihad. The fact that United were able to prevent Manchester City celebrating the title in front of them was a major victory in itself.

Sadly Mourinho’s side turned in a stinker this week at home to last place West Brom. The irony is that in losing to the Baggies, United officially handed the title to their crosstown rivals. It was reported that Pep Guardiola was on the golf course as his team were declared champions.

Even when he tries to show class, Mourinho has a hard time pulling it off. When asked in a post match interview about Manchester City’s title, he said “City were the best team, sooner or later they would get the points, so no dramas when the best team wins the league.”

He should have stopped the interview there. Unfortunately he felt the need to defend his fragile ego and added in the following: “I trust in my work. I have no reason not to – eight titles and three Premier Leagues and the last Premier League was not 20 years ago. It was three years ago and I know how to win. I believe in myself but I don’t play.”

The fact that he felt the need to rattle off a portion of his resume, shows just how fragile the “special one” truly is. Being gracious and showing some humility in defeat is hard, but they are characteristics that great managers need to have.

Thankfully Mourinho did not single out any specific players in this interview but he took digs at his team as a whole. When asked about the victory over City he responded,

"I was not in the moon with the victory against them. It was only three points. That didn’t make me feel super happy and, in my opinion, it affected some of the people that were too happy. I have lots of experience because I won eight titles and I was not over the moon … but I saw lots of people who were on the moon. During the week I was trying to fight that."

After the Red Devils’ 0-1 loss to West Brom it’s almost certain that Mourinho is not feeling “over the moon” right now.
