Tottenham news: Predicting which Spurs fullbacks will return next season
4. Serge Aurier-Chance of return-95%
Aurier arrived at the club late in the summer with massive expectations. Optimistic Spurs fans hoped he could serve as an improvement over Kyle Walker. Unfortunately, he’s failed to live up to the hype that accompanied his transfer from PSG.
It’s much too soon to give up on such a talented player though. Pochettino has shown the ability to work magic on fullbacks who fail under the tutelage of other managers. A full preseason under Pochettino may be the perfect cure for what ails Aurier.
Much of the Ivory Coast internationals issues come down to poor decision-making. He makes absolutely shocking challenges in critical moments. His propensity to give away penalties only tell part of the story. Aurier is capable of committing himself to a rash challenge anywhere on the pitch.
If Pochettino can teach him to play a smarter game, he could develop into an above average Premier League regular. It’s not a certainty that Aurier can make that adjustment, but he’ll almost definitely be given another year to figure things out.
