Tottenham could spend a fortune on this Lazio duo

If you thought the idea of Tottenham re-signing Gareth Bale seemed sensational, just wait until you read about the latest duo linked with a move to North London. The Mirror are reporting that Spurs could splash over £100 million to bring Ciro Immobile and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to the Premier League this summer.

In fairness to the English reports, they do make the claim that Tottenham would need to sell quite a few first team stars to fund this massive swoop. Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele would likely need to be sold before Daniel Levy could even entertain this kind of megadeal.

It’s certainly a deal that seems outlandish when you first read it. However, the more you think about it, the more plausible it seems. It’s still not a likely outcome, but it’s not impossible.

Tottenham certainly want to strengthen their attack this summer. Harry Kane is a world-class striker but the club’s options after him are sparse at best. Adding a dynamic goal scorer like Ciro Immobile could revolutionize the way Spurs can threaten their opponents. Immobile could start alongside Kane or he could shift the Englishman to a slightly deeper role as a number ten.

The real jewel of these reports is Milinkovic-Savic. When Mauricio Pochettino puts his head on the pillow at night and dreams of attacking midfielders they look a lot like the Serbian. He’s a real rarity in the middle of the pitch. The Lazio star is a player who can go forward, score goals and contribute to the match defensively. He’s the absolute epitome of what Pochettino wants from his attacking midfielders.

There are a couple of obvious issues with this report unfortunately. First of all, Lazio have absolutely no reason to sell either player. It’s very possible they will qualify for Champions League football next season. If they do that, selling their two best attackers would be a horrible message to their fans.

Secondly, the idea of Tottenham spending £100 million this summer on two players is pretty hard to digest. Perhaps it’s possible if Gareth Bale is one of the players, but it’s hard to envision for two Serie A stars.

In sum, the idea of Tottenham purchasing Immobile and Milinkovic-Savic this summer sounds great. The reality is it’s likely a pure dream for Spurs fans.
