Arsenal couldn’t get past Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals

Arsenal did pretty well throughout this season’s Europa League tournament. Unfortunately it ended in ugly fashion.

The Gunners were at home and played 80 minutes of the 90 with an extra player. The advantage was with Arsenal. Take a look at the game stats:

  • Possession: 76%-24%
  • Shots 28-6
  • Corners 11-0

The final score could easily have been 3-0, 4-0 or even more. Instead the match ended 1-1. It was basically Arsenal’s season in a nutshell – wasted possession and woeful defending.

There was a lot of talk about Arsene Wenger ending his time with the club with a European trophy. This match ended that dream.
